BURKE, VA — Adventure racing chatter is a side-effect of racing as a team. If you put four friends together and make them transverse 40-50 miles of back country woods, you are eventually going to talk. During a recent adventure racing excursion, Dauntless members brought up the subject of hiking. In particular, we played with the idea of stating our three top hiking locations. Since a 12-hour adventure race is a long, long time to travel (mentally), the following are the only three responses I could remember. Enjoy!
(1) Go on a Walkabout from Darwin, through Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia, all the way to Uluru (Ayers Rock).
(2) Hike the first Via Ferratas (Iron Road) mountain route that aided the movement of mountain infantry in World War I along the Dolomite Range in Italy.
(3) Hike the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (Canyons of the Escalante) to include the Coyote Gulch in Utah.
